Music

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. (The National Curriculum)

Intention

We aim to develop children's love of music and their talent as musicians. We recognise the importance for children to enjoy,  and to appreciate a variety of music through an experience of all genres of music. All Sellindge Primary School pupils will have the opportunity to develop, master and deepen their fundamental music skills. Alongside mastering musical skills our children will be encouraged to think of their own preferences and opinions about various pieces of music. They will learn an awareness and respect for different views, and the ways that music may wish to be expressed and appreciated in any person's life. We provide opportunities for children to create, play and perform, and enjoy music, both in class and to an audience. This experience and achievement will then increase their self-confidence and creativity.

Implementation

At Sellindge we use Charanga School of Music as the backbone of our music teaching. Teachers bring their own talents and teaching skills to personalise the lessons to suit their particular class. Our music curriculum is spiralled enabling children to revisit (in different contexts) and build on knowledge. As they progress through the year groups the curriculum becomes more complex, and they begin to develop their musicianship. They are challenged to be able to demonstrate understanding and creativity through performance and composition, working in collaboration with their peers, and through the evaluation of their own work.

Music at Sellindge is taught weekly in all classes but is experienced throughout the day in different ways. Our children love to perform and are given the opportunity to do so in assemblies, to the whole school, and to parents.

Impact

What the children have to say about Music at Sellindge...

"I can actually express myself"

"It makes me happy and proud"

"I feel successful because we sing beautifully"

"It is really fun"

"I like presenting it, singing it to the whole school"

Progress in Music is recorded through videos which are uploaded at the beginning and end of each unit.
