Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day

Term 3

This week we had our 'Fabulous Finale' where we wrote invitations to our families to invite them into the class so we could show them what we have been learning about.  We made some rock cakes and planet biscuits to enjoy together and we retold them the story of 'whatever next' that we have been learning this term.  Last week we found a tiny key outside and wondered what it was for.  This week, tiny footprints appeared across the classroom and we have started writing letters to 'Mop'.  We are hoping that we get to meet him very soon.

This week we celebrated Chinese New Year.  We learnt all about the history behind the celebration and how it is celebrated around the world.  We tried some delicious Chinese food and some of us tried to use chopsticks.  We finished our space station role play area this week so we have been on lots of adventures.  There was also an exciting event in our outside area, where an alien spacecraft had crash landed! We found footprints and drew and labelled pictures of what we thought the alien might look like.

This week we have done lots of work on measuring in our maths.  We have been finding things that are heavier or lighter than objects in the classroom and checking our predictions using the scales.  We also used scales when we made some delicious biscuits and weighed out the ingredients.  We have also looked at capacity and talking about whether our cups were full or empty when pouring our drinks.

This week we have continued on our space adventure.  We have learnt the story of 'Whatever Next' with actions and have been using a story map to draw and write the main parts of the story.  We have been learning about the solar system and have been making our own solar system display.  In maths we have been focusing on numbers within 5 and have been trying to work out the amount of objects missing by uisng our number knowledge.

This week we began learning our Talk for Writing story, 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy.  We thought about what we would take to the moon and used our sounds to draw and label things in a backpack.  We then imagined getting in our rocket and zoomed to the moon.  We explored our surroundings, enjoyed a picnic before heading back to earth.  We have a dark tent set up in our room at the moment so we have been exploring torches and other light sources.

It's been a short but busy first week back in Hedgehog class this week.  Our role play area has become Tesco so we have been busy making price labels and writing shopping lists.  We have been learning about all of the different sections in a Supermarket and thinking about which shops we could visit in Sellindge to get the same items.  We have been working hard with making sure we are writing our numbers correctly and using our sounds when writing labels to go on our work.  We finished the week by enjoying some toast which we spread and cut independently.
