Primary School

Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day

Term 1

We finished Term 1 in a spooky way.  Ethel the witch had turned our home corner into her cottage and asked us to make her some new spells.  We got to work quickly, writing spells to turn people into frogs and made a hedgehog spell book.  We used our measuring skills to make some magical potions outside and also carved pumpkins.  Last weekend we were busy collecting items on a nature treasure hunt and we have been sorting these to add to our autumn cafe and talked about all of the different things we found.  This week we have started learning our new sounds in phonics and have been playing games tp help us remember them.  We finished the week by getting by sticky by making some delicious chocolate apples to take home.

We have continued learning the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and have performed our Talk for Writing story for the rest of the school. Goldilocks has been causing havoc in the classroom, trying to find the porridge and we have been trying to think of ways to stop her! We have made wanted posters and made traps to try and catch her.  We made a new house for the three bears in our outside area which we hope will be Goldilock proof!  We have been trying to tempt her into our traps with some porridge oat trails.  We have been learning about repeating patterns this week and have enjoyed making pattern fruit kebabs.  Our outside kitchen is now an Autumn Cafe with some delicious recipes to try.

This week we have been carrying on playing with the oats in our investigation and discovery time.  We have been learning the story of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears, where we have been making bear masks, puppets and retelling the story in the home corner.  We also made some porridge to try but made sure we ate it quickly before Goldilocks arrived.  We have been comparing the size and weight of things around the room and when we were making our porridge.  We made sure that each group had the same amount of oats in their saucepan by using the scales.

This week we have been learning all about Harvest.  We have been finding out all about where our food comes from and tried to make our own flour by grinding oats.  We made some delicious bread rolls.  We made the dough, waited for it to rise and then shaped them into hedgehogs.  We finished off by taking part in our first assembly where we celebrated harvest and sang in front of the whole school and our families.

This week we have been spending time exploring the outside area.  Carrying on with our camping fun, we had a camp fire in the wildlife area, where we toasted marshmallows and made smores.  They were delicious!  We had our first woodland wander, where we put on our wellies and we looked for clues to find out what season we were in.  We thought it might be Autumn as the leaves had started to fall from the trees.  We also picked some apples while we were walking and used them to make an apple crumble.

Last week some of our children were talking about going camping in the holidays and were pretending to pack their bags and head off on another trip so we turned our outside area into a campsite!  We have been making our food on the fire, booking people in to the campsite and making signs so that the visitors knew what the rules were.  We also stayed for lunch this week and had lots of help from our Year 6 buddies.

Wow! What a fantastic and busy first week we have had in Hedgehog class.  We are so proud of how amazing everyone has been.  We have been very busy exploring our new classroom and getting to know our new friends.  Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome this week when we visited you at home.  It was so lovely to be able to do this and find out about more about the children.  Have a look below, at some of what we have been up to this week.
